What does it do?

Coconut - Everybody's talking about it, it's in everything and for good reason.

  • It improves barrier function.  (See Ask the Aesthetician to find out more about barrier function.)

  • It penetrates. Because of its fatty acid nature, coconut oil easily  penetrates skin and hair.

  • Anecdotal evidence suggests it can whiten teeth, help prevent tooth decay and gum bleeding.

  • protects hair against sun, salt and chlorine damage

  • is a natural SPF 4

  • has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties due to capric, caprylic and lauric acids

  • gives skin a soft smooth texture

  • It contains no petroleum based ingredients which can suffocate the skin.

Tips:

Keep a jar in the shower.  After patting the skin dry apply coconut oil to the whole body.

Makes a great eye make-up remover.

Although it takes some getting used to, you can swish it around you mouth to help keep it clean and healthy.

Work a small ammount through your hair at night, then wash and condition in the morning.  It washes out beautifully.

Cucumber - Other than the mud or seaweed mask, the most common mental picture when we think of skin care treatments are probably cucumber slices covering the eyelids. Why is it done? Because cucumbers have soothing, tightening, and refreshing properties. They are used in aftershaves, toners, eye treatments and oily skin preperations.  Other esthetic qualities of cucumber are:

  • moisture binding and regulating

  • anti-itching

  • softening

  • healing

  • anti-inflammatory

  • acid mantle strengthener

Whether you slice 'em up and slap 'em on or go for the more refined retail beauty preperations cucumbers are not just for garden salads!

The Sugar That's Good For You!

Glycolic Acid - the simplest of the alpha hydroxyacids is believed to have better penetration because of it's low molecular weigh. It breaks down the intercellular cement that binds dead skin cells so that they can be removed thus preventing pore clogging and skin choking build-up.

  • improves hydration

  • increases skin's water binding ability

  • keeps pores clear

  • diminishes age spots and actinic keratosis

  • because of it's hydrating effect it leads to reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

  • makes skin softer and smoother

  • generally beneficial for all skin types

Retinol - one of the few substances to be proven effective in the treatment of aging.

  • Vitamin A molecule

  • the gold standard of dermatologists

  • can reduce and prevent fine lines and wrinkles

  • counteracts the activity of enzymes that degrade collagen and elastin

  • actually increases collagen synthesis

  • not a quick fix, can take up to six months for visible difference

  • can cause irritation, photosensitivity, skin dryness, redness and peeling.  These symptoms are usually a sign that the concentration is too high

  • sunscreen use while using this ingredient is a must!

  • NOT SAFE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN! HIGH RISK OF BIRTH DEFECTS!
